About

Who am I and what this is all about:

Originally my intent was to blog and disseminate information from a doctor’s perspective as well as give updates on scientific research and how this can be applied to help those on the autism spectrum to help the community. I thought this would be different. My perspective comes from that of a functional neurology and functional medicine (including biomedical) approach that treats the Autism Spectrum (Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, Sensory Integration, Processing Disorders, Asperger’s Syndrome, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Tourette’s Syndrome and Autism). My version of H.I.T., Hemispheric Integration Therapy for the spectrum involves both functional medicine and functional neurology applied to children and adults in a specific way. These treatments can not be “canned.” Although there are some similarities, these children are all different and there treatment must be individulized not only from person to person but also through time. That is, what was right for the patient on week one may not be right for the patient on week three.

This model looks for a desynchronized brain with under functioning areas and pathways that is termed a “Functional disconnect syndrome.” I treat what I find. That is after a thorough history and functional neurological examination a brain based rehabilitation program (to strengthen and exercise those weakened areas) is designed to meet the specific examination findings found on the patient on that particular day. As should be expected the treatment is based on the findings and treatment plans or can often change on a daily if not weekly basis. At my office by rule I see each and every spectrum patient every day with few exceptions. Functional neurology works on patients of all ages however in the young with little chronic disease such as diabetes, cholesterol, heart disease, etc the progress these children can make is at times as rapid as it is amazing. The functional medicine and functional neurology are combined to suit what is appropriate for that patient including factors such as: what do they need, what can they do, what can they tolerate. We try to make the treatments fun so you don’t have to drag the kids to the office but instead they look forward to coming. One mom told me that her daughter liked coming for treatment more than going to Busch Gardens(the theme park) and that she realized on day that “Dr. Mane is a person and not a toy.”

As I started doing more presentations and meeting more parents and professional I discovered that there is still a great void among parents regarding information about techniques to help manage the day and cope with the unique needs that your child may present. In Tampa alone, (where we have a support group for parents) we have parents sharing and teaching each other life skills i.e. how to manage long trips in the car. There are parents who can help others track legislative bills and promote laws that will benefit the entire community. There are parents with experiences that might help you deal with the school and getting the services you are entitled to. If this exists in my practice then I am sure it exist in the entire community. Someone in California or Germany might be able to share something that will help someone in Iowa. Lets not forget that there are new parents that are being given the news of their child’s condition everyday. So I invite knowledgeable parents to share and inexperience ones to ask questions.

My name is Dr. Nelson Mane. I was one of eleven chiropractic physicians chosen by the American Chiropractic Association to start the first chiropractic neurology board in 1989. I am one of a few doctors board certified in chiropractic neurology and chiropractic orthopedics. I have additional sub-specialty training in childhood neuro-behavioral disorders, vestibular disorders and electro diagnostics.  I have been in practice as a chiropractic physician in Tampa, Florida since 1985. What do I do for fun? I have a wife of 25 years and 2 wonderful children. I read an hour of neurology and functional medicine every night.

I can not give specific medical advice but can share case studies and my knowledge and hope that this in some way helps the community. This is my Blog. I hope something written here helps at least one family out there.
