More Bad News for Adult ADHD Sufferers

Adult ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder) sufferers have been known to have higher incarceration with rates, the difficulty in school, higher pregnancy rates, higher obesity rates and more difficulty forming relationships.  Currently 5 to 10% of school age children are thought to have ADHD.  Roughly 50% of those children will grow up to be a adults who suffer from ADHD.  A new study in the European Journal of Neurology suggest more bad news for adults with ADHD.  The study found that adults with dementia with Lewy bodies had a 47.8% frequency of proceeding ADHD symptoms vs.  15.1 percent in the control group.  This suggest that there was approximately a 3 times greater risk of developing dementia with Lewy bodies for those adults with ADHD symptoms when compared to those without ADHD symptoms.  Lewy bodies are protein aggregates that develop inside nerve cells and are associated with other neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease. Current science has no explanation for the association between the two disease processes, however this study certain to prompt more investigation  which may aid in the understanding and treatment of both disorders.  Common signs and symptoms associated with Lewy body dementia include variation in cognition (thought processing) and attention, visual hallucinations (usually seeing people or pets that are not actually present ) and Parkinson like movement disorders ( slow to initiate movement, shuffling gait, expressionless face.) Four controllable risk factors if you were pregnant to lower your chances of having a child with adhd include quitting smoking the moment you discover you’re pregnant, don’t drink while you are pregnant, avoid toxin exposure and avoid a high fat diet during pregnancy. Recall that children with ADHD become adults with ADHD and that this new evidence suggests may become seniors with dementia with Lewy bodies. Thus, if you suffer from ADHD, this should give you more motivation to make seeking appropriate treatment a priority in your life.

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: previous reports have shown that in Dementia with Lewy body (DLB) and attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) a hypodopaminergic and noradrenergic substrate seems to play a central role in developing the diseases. We investigated the hypothesis that attention deficit may precede DLB expressed as adult ADHD symptoms long before the clinical onset of dementia.

METHODS: patients with DLB, Alzheimer disease type (ADT) and controls were recruited from the membership of the Italian Hospital Medical Care Program in Argentina from 2000 to 2005. The DSM-IV criteria adapted for the identification of adult patients with ADHD and validated to Spanish Wender Utah Rating Scale were used to identify individuals with preceding ADHD symptoms during their adult life. Analysis of categorical variables was carried out using chi-square. Mann-Whitney test was used for continuous variables. Statistical significance was P < 0.05.

RESULTS: a total of 109 patients with DLB and 251 patients with ADT were matched by age, sex and year of education with 149 controls. The frequency of preceding ADHD symptoms in DLB cases was 47.8% in ADT 15.2% and 15.1% in the control group. The prevalence of ADHD symptoms in DLB cases was significantly higher compared with the control group (P ≤ 0.001, OR 5.1 95%CI 2.7-9.6) and also higher when compared with ADT (P ≤ 0.001, OR 4.9, 95%CI 2.8-8.4). Conclusion: we found a higher risk of DLB in patients with preceding adult ADHD symptoms. To date, there is no clear explanation for the association found; however, further investigation will widen our understanding about both disorders.

ADHD AND SECOND HAND SMOKE

A new study suggest out of the University of California San Francisco suggest that children exposed to second hand smoke are more likely to have ADHD and to stutter. According to the CDC your risk of coronary heart disease and stroke  increases by 2 to 4 times. your risk of developing lung cancer increase by 23 and  13times respectively for males and females. Your risk of developing  COPD increases by 12 to 13 times. If you don’t care about yourself, why not quit for the kids. This study found the rates of ADHD and stuttering were nearly doubled for children ages 4 to 15 exposed to second hand smoke . Other risk factors such as being male or a familial history can not being avoided but this risk factor certainly can. Attempts to quit smoking can be extremely difficult but there is help available for those who are motivated. Perhaps this will serve as motivation for parents to get help. You may not be able to quit or even may not want to quit but if you have children especially boys please make the effort to not expose them to second hand smoke. Changing habits to include not smoking in the car with children present and stepping outside to smoke  may help prevent your child from  risk factors  associated with ADHD such as difficulty in school, higher substance abuse rate and higher incarceration rates.

2010: ADHD and Pesticides?

ADHD affects approximately 10% of school age children. A new study published in the journal of pediatrics indicates children with higher levels of organophosphates (chemicals used in pesticides) were almost twice as likely to have ADHD. Do not be over alarmed, the study only shows an association, an association does not mean cause and effect. The study also does not indicate where the organophosphates came from only that they were present. However, the study certainly suggests that more research is needed. These pesticides are designed to be nerve agents for bugs. It is postulated that due to the developing brains of children they may be more susceptible also due to their low body weight. Think about a children’s dose for medication and how it is lower than an adult dose. In the past, other factors such as genetics, nutrition and other toxins have been associated with ADHD.  A 2009 study found a associating between ADHD and children that were exposed to lead as well as prenatal tobacco use. The basics still apply: 1. Wash fruits and vegetables, especially those without thick skins, 2. Peel and trim fruits and vegetable, and 3. Buy organic if your budget allows. Dr. Nelson Mane D.C., a doctor who treats children with ADHD and learning disabilities with Hemispheric Integration Therapy a neurological approach as well as Functional Medicine which looks at nutritional deficiencies and toxic exposures in Tampa said, “Overall this study should be educational and raise awareness. There seems to be many factors involved and we do not know if it is one factor or more than likely a combination of several factors contributing to the high rates of ADHD.  I would be more cautious if my child fell into some of the other risk categories such as exposure to lead, tobacco exposure during pregnancy, familial history, etc.”

Dr. Nelson Mane is a chiropractic physician certified in both chiropractic orthopedics and neurology. He has sub specialty training in childhood neurobehavioral disorders as well as vestibular disorders and electro diagnostics. Tourette’s Syndrome Beware

Here is some interesting information from the site http://physician-assistant.advanceweb.com/editorial/content/editorial.aspx?CC=41662

The summary relates to those with ADHD and speaks to the effectiveness  of current medications as well as some contraindications. Often I must remind parents that these  are spectrum disorders and there is much overlap among conditions. That is, for example, one can have a child with OCD and ADHD or Asperger’s Syndrome with ADHD. In this case, the warning is to those with Tourettes Syndrome and ADHD. Be careful of the conditions that your child may have and the medications they are given. The paragraph below speaks to a contraindication for the ADHD medication group if you have tics or Tourettes. Just in the last 3 months we have had 2 patients  treating in our Hemisperic Integration therapy Program with that exact combination.

ADHD Drug Performed Well in StudyTreatment with once-daily Metadate CD (methylphenidate) Extended-Release Capsules by Celltech Pharma was more effective in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) than treatment with another frequently used drug, according to a study recently published in the online edition of the journal Pediatrics (Swanson JM, Wigal SB, Wigal T, et al. A comparison of once-daily methylphenidate formulations in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in the laboratory school [the COMACS study.] 2004;113:e206-e216).

Metadate CD was more effective than the other drug during the morning hours and the two drugs performed similarly during afternoon hours, according to a company press release. Both formulations provide an initial dose of immediate-release methylphenidate. The initial dose is followed by an extended, controlled delivery of methylphenidate. The study included 184 children between the ages of 6 and 12 with ADHD.

Metadate CD Capsules are contraindicated in patients with marked anxiety, tension and/or agitation; in patients with glaucoma, tics or Tourette’s syndrome; and within 14 days of using monoamine oxidase inhibitors. Metadate CD Capsules should be used with caution in patients with a history of psychosis, drug or alcohol dependence, seizures, hypertension or cardiovascular disease.

The most common adverse reactions are headache, abdominal pain, decreased appetite and insomnia.

H.I.T. Autism Summer Conference

I just got home from our summer conference here in Tampa. Everyone I talked to said they got a lot of information. I spoke regarding Hemispheric Integration Therapy as well as Functional Medicine with regard to Biomedical Interventions for the Autism Spectrum. Dr Knaus gave us some backround on himself as well as gave us some information regarding HBOT. Nancy Bentley informed us with regards to fermented foods and a diet which promotes digestive and general health. Suzanne Azizi ( I am a mother first) provided a passionate and inspiring story about her daughter and dealing with the educational system, IEPs and the law. The faciliies at the Children’s Board were excellent. Everyone seemed to have a good time a well as came away with some good information and it was free to all. So, I am happy with our first conference. Look for our next one!!

Parents are so knowledgeable

Last week we had our support group meeting here in Tampa. I am so amazed and impressed with the store house of knowledge that some of our parents have regarding this broad and life encompassing subject that is the autism spectrum community. This subject is immense. I spend my time where I feel it is best allocated reading diligently about neurology or functional medicine. I have a family. I have a practice. Yet I still try to read at least an hour a night and more on the weekends. Yes, some people say I am a bit nerdy or boring because of this. For this reason I am so thankful to these parents that are really expert in subjects like I.E.P.s, home schooling, the law and legislative process and advocating for their children. Just listening to them share and help other parents is like having a private tutor on this subject. Thanks to all those who help, share and educate me and others.
